DESCRIPTION

1973 Wasque 32 Downeast

Turn heads wherever you go in this classic Martha’s Vineyard Shipyards Wasque 32’, located on Long Island Sound in Huntington, New York.  They literally broke the mold on this perfect Downeast day boat, cocktail cruiser, and weekender, and Whippoorwill has been lovingly and professionally upgraded and maintained throughout her life.  You will be the envy of all, sipping a cold drink while your boat sips a mere 6-8 gallons per hour as she slices through waves with ease for an incredibly comfortable ride.

Whippoorwill had a major refit in the early 2000’s of all of her key components and systems, including: a new cockpit sole, new cabin interior, new fuel system, new engine exhaust installed in 2003, new cooling system installed in 2004, and a complete engine and transmission rebuild and replacement of all plumbing and electrical wiring in 2006.

Cabin sides and combing boards are thick solid mahogany, painted white on the exterior surfaces to resist UV and weather damage, and varnished with a satin finish below for a warm and cozy feel in the cabin.  The solid teak windshield has two large custom-fabricated split-opening windows that provide excellent ventilation in the cockpit underway and at anchor.  Down below, ventilation flows through a large 18” x 18” overhead hatch and four bronze opening portholes.  Exterior surfaces of the windshield are thoughtfully painted white to resist the elements, while interior surfaces (protected under the large Sunbrella Bimini) are varnished with a high gloss finish.  Headroom is excellent throughout the boat with a height in the cabin of 6’ 3” and under the Bimini of 6’ 9”.  All white surfaces and the boat’s black hull are hand-painted with Interlux Brightside and are easily maintained with a light sanding and occasional maintenance coat, while the non-skid Awlgrip decks and cockpit sole provide good traction and resist the wear of foot traffic.

Whippoorwill has been winter-stored indoors for the past 24 years, and the current owners have had all engine and mechanical systems professionally maintained (records available to serious inquirers upon request). They have also continued to upgrade her in recent years, including: a new Sunbrella Bimini top in 2022, new 7” thick memory foam v-berth cushions, 3” thick settee cushion and exterior chair cushions in 2015, new custom teak swim platform with swimmer-deployable stainless steel boarding ladder, Weaver dinghy davits and outboard engine storage in 2018, and new custom-fabricated teak and stainless-steel movable engine box backrest and cushions in 2016.   Recent electrical and electronics upgrades include: new Fusion MS-RA55 Bluetooth stereo and new ICOM M506 Fixed Mount VHF Radio with AIS, NMEA 2000, in 2018, and new stern and side navigation lights in 2022.  Recent mechanical upgrades include: new starter motor in 2015, new exhaust manifolds in 2018, new engine hoses and exhaust hoses in 2019, new fuel pump and carburetor rebuild in 2020, new engine raw water impeller in 2021, new exhaust risers and elbows in 2021, and new Aquamet 22 stainless steel propeller shaft and cutlass bearing in 2022.

Bottom was sand-blasted and barrier coated in 2015; most recently re-painted with Seahawk Cu-Kote in 2022.

Accommodations

On deck, Whippoorwill features a very open cockpit with 2 folding deck chairs, varnished teak cockpit table, varnished teak high chair, and helm seating.  The engine box offers additional seating with a custom backrest made by C.W. Hood in Marblehead, MA (the current builder of the new Wasque 26s) that can be cleverly positioned forward to create a two-person lounge or moved aft to provide upright seating when company is aboard.  Below you will find a traditional Herreshoff style interior (white bead board paneling and satin-varnished teak and mahogany throughout) with a king-sized V-berth, 4 opening bronze ports, 1 opening 18” x 18” varnished teak hatch, an enclosed head compartment with vanity and sink to starboard, a settee to port with storage behind/below, and a substantial hanging locker with shelving.
